This site has been constructed and is maintained by unpaid volunteers from the Spike Island community.
Until the 70's this area was a marshalling yard. Since then it has been an area where Bristolians can relax surrounded by what is left of the working docks - the only part of Bristol where such a maritime past survives.
It is now designated for housing - a lucrative site for any developer. Waterfront apartments fetch high prices.
But compare Baltic Wharf and Wapping Wharf. Baltic Wharf is pleasant and reflects the current trend for modern waterfront housing. But Wapping Wharf, more than any other part of Bristol, reflects the time when Bristol had a working harbour. This is what makes it so valuable for many people.
The council have recognised this importance in the Local Plan. Have the developers done so in their new design?
Their first attempt was thrown out.
The purpose of this website is to make sure you know what is planned for Wapping Wharf so that you can make up your own mind.
A model and the plans themselves can be seen at Brunel House....
